Call For Bowls…Donate Pieces for Empty Bowls 2009

Bring us your bowls, and help feed the hungry! Empty Bowls is a grassroots effort by artists and craftspeople in cities and towns across the country to feed the hungry in their communities. Your donated bowls will be purchased, and all proceeds will be utilized by the Houston Food Bank to feed the hungry in the Greater Houston Area, including Harris County and surrounding counties.

In 2008, local craft artists contributed more than 1,000 bowls made from clay, wood, metal, glass, fiber, paper, and other materials to Empty Bowls 2008, providing Houstonians a wide variety from which to choose. Empty Bowls 2008 raised more than $44,000 to fight hunger in Houston and neighboring communities. We hope to do even better this year!

Empty Bowls 2009, our fifth event, will be held May 2009, at two neighboring facilities: the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft at 4848 Main Street and the Lawndale Art Center at 4912 Main Street. Purchasers receive a free bowl of soup, a slice of bread, and a bottle of water (all that many people in Houston and surroundings eat in a day), and have the opportunity to enjoy lunch and their new bowls with a musical accompaniment.

Bring your donated bowls to 4848 Main Street or to the Ceramic Store at 1002 W. 11th beginning the week of April 21. Any bowls are welcome, but for anyone wondering about size, think in terms of a bowl for serving soup: height from 2"-4", diameter from 4"-6", volume 1.5 - 3 cups. Bowls do not need to be functional. They can be created by ceramists, woodturners, glassblowers, fiber artists, metalsmiths, painters, sculptors, and artists and craftspeople of all kinds!
